REPLACING THE STARLITE 55 FAN CONTROL THERMOSTAT
The Starlite 55 Colorhead uses a single fan to cool
it's three lamps. Since this fan is controlled by a
thermostat, it will turn on and off during operation.
Having the fan run only some of the time, rather than
constantly, reduces the amount of dirt that collects
inside the enclosure.
Occasionally, the contacts inside the fan thermostat
will become dirty and will begin to cause electrical
noise when the fan tries to turn on. This electrical
noise can cause numerous problems with the normal operation
of the Starlite colorhead, and any other electrical
appliances nearby, like an AM radio. In fact, a good
way to check the thermostat's condition is to place
an AM radio near the Starlite. The radio will issue
a short burst of static whenever the fan turns on or
off, if the thermostat is bad. A good thermostat will
cause only a small click from the radio.
REPLACEMENT OF THIS THERMOSTAT IS AS FOLLOWS
- Open the door of the Starlite colorhead and remove
the filtration transport assembly.
- Remove the cover that houses the three lamps.
-
On the filter transport junction board,
locate the two wires that go to the fan thermostat.
The positions of these wires are labeled "FAN
THERM" on the circuit board. See the picture
below.

Use a small (1/8-inch) flat-blade screwdriver to loosen
the two appropriate screws, and pull the wires from
the green terminal strip.
- Locate the thermostat mounted near the lamps. It
is mounted in a small plate alongside the lamp-overheat
thermostat. Be sure you have the correct thermostat,
and pull it out of the mount.
- Route the wires from the new thermostat through
the hole in the thermostat mount plate and then through
the larger grommet with all the other wires in it.
You may want to remove the thermostat mounting plate
to do this.
- Once the wires are routed through the mounting plate
and the main grommet, slide the new thermostat into
final position in the mounting plate. It should be
positioned as shown in the picture above, right.
- Insert the new thermostat's wires into the terminal
strip, and tighten the screws. Check these connections
to be sure that the wires are firmly attached to the
strip.
- Re-install the lamp cover on the filter transport
and replace the transport into the Starlite enclosure.
- Turn the head on and verify that it works properly.
