REPLACING THE COLOR SENSOR IN THE ZBE STARLITE 55 COLORHEAD

The Starlite 55 Colorhead uses a Color Sensor to read the filtration of output light directly from the inside of the mixing chamber. The colorhead is thus able to maintain consistent light output over a wide range of filtration and density. Following are instructions for replacing this sensor.

NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE REQUIRES A RECALIBRATION OF THE STARLITE 55, AND WILL RENDER ANY CURRENT OR VCNA COLOR STANDARD ALIGNMENT INVALID.

  1. Unplug the Colorhead from the Mains AC Power and open the door. The color sensor faces the left-hand wall of the mixing chamber. Remove the Mixing Chamber at this time.
  2. Unplug the Sensor's Cable from the Main Circuit Board at the rear of the interior of the Colorhead. This is a flat grey 'ribbon' cable which plugs onto the main board's "SENSOR#1" connector at the lower left corner of that board. Note the red stripe that runs along one side of the grey ribbon cable. This lines up with pin one ("1") of the board's connector. This pin is denoted by a small white "1" printed on the green circuit board itself.
  3. The sensor is attached to a metal mounting bracket which is mounted to the left side of the colorhead with four screws. Loosen these screws and remove the Sensor from the head.
  4. If the new Sensor has no grey cable attached to it, transfer the cable from the old sensor, making sure to maintain the red-striped side of the ribbon in the same orientation on the new sensor as it was on the old one.
  5. Position the new Sensor in the Colorhead and attach it using the screws removed in step.
  6. Plug the other end of the cable onto the Main Circuit Board, with the red stripe closest to the end of the connector with the "1" next to it. Be sure the connector is properly positioned over both rows of pins.

This completes the installation of the new color sensor. It will now need to be re-calibrated for operation in this particular Starlite. To do this, enter the "STARLITE DISGNOSTICS" menu. From this menu select the "AUTOCALIBRATE COLOR SENSOR" function, and press the Enter key. The calibration will take about 15 seconds.

The Starlite 55 is now ready for normal use. Initial test printing, Shirley alignment, etc., will now be necessary as the Colorhead is now calibrated to a slightly different color balance.
