REPLACEMENT OF STARLITE 55 SHUTTER MOTOR BELT

The motors used in the Starlite Colorhead all use small rubber belts to transfer the motor's torque to it's gearbox. Occasionally, these belts, particularly the one on the Shutter motor, will wear out and need to be replaced. The procedure below utilizes a specially-made tool to make this job easier. This tool is available from ZBE, Inc. Without it, the motors assembly of the colorhead will need to removed in order to get to the affected motor.

To obtain a motor belt installation tool, please contact ZBE, Inc., at:

TO REPLACE A STARLITE MOTOR BELT:

  1. Remove the filter transport from the Starlite colorhead.
  2. Locate the motors assembly on the lower, rear area of the main transport plate. Identify the shutter motor: this is the motor closest to the rear of the transport assembly.
  3. Examine the shutter motor and locate where the belt spans the motor pulley and the smaller gearbox pulley.
  4. Remove the old belt, if it is still in the pulley area.
  5. Use a small brush to wipe any dirt or rubber dust from the motor belt area. Do not use any solvents or oil in this area.

Use the belt installation tool to push one side of the new belt between the motor pulley and the body of the gearbox. See the diagram below.

In the figure, note that the belt is slipped between the top of the pulley on the motor and the bottom surface of the gearbox. The installation tool is then used to push that one side of the belt through so that the belt will then be in position around the motor pulley.

Be careful not to damage the belt with the tool while pushing it through.

With the belt in place around the shutter motor pulley, use the hooked end of the insertion tool to pull the belt around the gearbox pulley. Take care not to stretch the belt excessively while doing this. Once the belt in installed on the two pulleys, rotate the output shaft of the gearbox (the long shaft with the drive gear on it) in order to make the motor turn. Watch that the belt runs smoothly and does not jump off either pulley.
