REPLACING THE VC-CLS EPROM SOFTWARE CHIP

The VC-CLS is a computer-controlled lightsource. As such, it utilizes software to tell the computer how to act. This sheet outlines the procedure for replacing the software that the VC-CLS runs in its computer. This software is contained in a single EPROM Chip located at the top of the main circuit board.

NOTE: Before beginning this procedure, please read the following regarding replacement of EPROM software chips. This is general advice on the topic of chip replacement.

EPROM INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

To replace the EPROM in the VC-CLS:

  1. Locate the four small screws that hold the VC-CLS front panel onto the main enclosure. These screws are located just to the rear of the seam where the front panel (with the keys and knob) meets with the main enclosure. There are two at the top and two at the bottom. Remove these four screws.
  2. Remove the front panel by simply pulling it forward from the main enclosure. There will be one short electrical cable connecting the main circuit board (located in the main enclosure) to the electronics in the front panel. Unplug this cable at the main circuit board.
  3. On the main circuit board, locate the software EPROM chip at the top edge of the board, toward the right-hand side. This is the chip that has a printed paper label marked "VCLS" followed by a number. Remove this chip, as indicated in the attached sheet.
  4. Once the EPROM is removed, install the new one in the same position. It is very important to note the orientation of the notch that is at one end of the EPROM Chip. This notch must be aligned with the notch in the socket. On the VC-CLS, this is such that the notch is on the left side.
  5. Inspect the newly-installed EPROM to be sure that it is fully seated and no pins are bent underneath the chip body. (This is a common problem with installing EPROM chips.)
  6. Re-connect the electrical cable from the front panel electronics to the main circuit board. Make sure that the cable is plugged in correctly, with both rows of pins in the connector body. An incorrectly installed connection here will damage the front panel electronics.
  7. Push the front panel into place on the front of the main enclosure. Once seated, re-install the four screws removed in step #1.
  8. Apply power to the VC-CLS unit in the normal manner. Verify that the unit is functioning properly.

If there are any problems or question regarding this procedure, or the newly-installed software contact ZBE at the address, phone numbers or e-mail below.
